Kerala locality celebrates FIFA World Cup by painting houses with Brazil, Argentina and Portugal flags

By Shibimol KG: In Kerala's Thiruvananthapuram, a colony named Rajaji Nagar or Chengal Choola has painted the houses with Brazil's and Argentina's colours. The colony welcomes you with flags, cutouts, posters and paintings on the walls.

Portraits of Neymar, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have been painted on the walls of the colony. Chengal Choola has close to 1500 families of daily wage workers staying there.

A glimpse of the Kerala colony.

The area is divided mainly into three. One side is dedicated to Brazil, one to Argentina and the other to Portugal. All the areas lead you to a small junction kind of ending where the love for football meets. It also has its small share of France and Germany fans.

A wall of one of the houses features the jerseys of Brazil players. Huge posters of Brazil's legendary Ronaldinho and Pele can also be seen. You can actually feel like you are on one of the Brazilian streets.

Walls of Chengal Choola.

Lionel Messi walking with his coveted Copa America trophy is what you find at the ultimate end of the colony. Portugal's flag and Ronaldo's black and white painting occupies an entire wall.

The colony also has their own football team with some of them playing at a professional level. One of the paintings read, "Say No to Drugs and Yes to Football".

The bylanes of Chengal Choola.

The older women in the colony spoke about their children's craze for the most watched sport in the world. One of the residents, Vinil Lawrence, said that the planning started two to three months ago. "The fans of each team started planning how to put up posters and paintings. Everybody contributes a particular amount according to their capacity. We have received Rs 100 to Rs 1000 contributions from individuals".

Brazil has the highest number of fans in the colony. Three screens were put up to watch Brazil's first game against Serbia. In Kerala, it’s often said that after Onam, the FIFA World Cup is the most celebrated event. It is no less than a festival for the land down south that loves football like life.
