By Sneha Saha: Apple starts manufacturing iPhone 14 in India at Foxconn's plant located near Chennai. Living up to all the rumours, the Cupertino-based tech giant has started assembling this year's iPhone model much earlier than last year. Reports suggest that it's because Apple wants to move 25 per cent of its entire iPhone production line to India by 2025. By starting iPhone 14 manufacturing earlier in India, Apple has started its journey to achieve the goal.
As per reports, the locally manufactured iPhone 14 models will be shipped from Foxconn’s Sriperumbudur facility situated on the outskirts of Chennai. According to PTI, Apple is excited to start manufacturing the latest iPhone model in India. “We're excited to be manufacturing iPhone 14 in India,” the company noted in an official statement. "The new iPhone 14 lineup introduces groundbreaking new technologies and important safety capabilities," the company further told the publication.
Apple already manufactures several iPhone models including -- the iPhone 13, iPhone 12, and iPhone SE in India. The company works with three partners to assemble iPhone models in the country Wistron, Foxconn, and Pegatron. The local manufacturing of the iPhone 14 is in direct response to the Indian government’s production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme.
Launched earlier this month, iPhone 14 starts at a price of Rs 79,900 in India. Now that the iPhone 14 will be manufactured locally in India, the question is -- will the price of the model drop in the country? The answer is: Maybe not. Or, maybe yes.
By manufacturing the iPhone 14 in India, Apple will be able to save 20 per cent on import duty, which may impact the price of the model later, but there may not be any immediate changes in the pricing.
It is seldom that Apple cuts the global pricing for a local market. To recall, Apple didn’t officially cut the prices of the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 even when these models were assembled locally. However, the company does partner with some banks to offer discount offers on third party platforms like Amazon and Flipkart. Now, this may be the case with the iPhone 14 as well. But, nothing has been confirmed so far.
Another reason why local manufacturing may not impact iPhone 14's price in India is -- the iPhone will only be assembled in the country and there is barely any local sourcing of components. As a result, the cost of production doesn’t really drop, even in the case of local manufacturing. So, all in all, there may not be any immediate changes in pricing of iPhone 14.
