By India Today Web Desk: World Cup winner and Italy legend Gianluigi Buffon heaped praise on Iran after their dramatic and stunning victory over Wales on Friday in the tournament in Qatar.

In a must-win game for both sides, the Asian giants were on top of their game and had many chances to open the scoring. They also had a goal ruled out for offside by VAR in the 15th minute and also rattled the post a couple of times as well.


Wayne Hennessey's red card proved to be the turning point of the match as Iran took full advantage of the numbers and scored two late goals from Rouzbeh Cheshmi and Ramin Rezaeian in the eighth and eleventh minutes of stoppage time.

The Iran team has been getting a lot of praise from all over the globe with the latest being Buffon. The 2006 World Cup winner said that the team will be remembered for their courage and the win is a sign of hope for the people in Iran who are protesting against the government. Buffon said that the Iran players are heroes for many people for him, an example.

"You will be remembered for your courage. This win is a sign of hope and strength for those in your country who are fighting for freedom. For many people you are heroes, for me an example," said Buffon.

Speaking after the win, Iran boss Carlos Queiroz also praised his team and said that his players deserve all the attention and praise from the fans.

"This is just the beginning. We need now to finish the job. But it was a wonderful day for us. We're back to football and I don't have words to say, how to say thank you to our players. They were brilliant. They deserve all the attention and respect and I think today, the people understand that these boys love to play football," said Queiroz.
