By India Today Web Desk: Manchester United announced in the late hours of Tuesday, 22 November that they have come to an agreement with their star forward Cristiano Ronaldo to terminate their contract midway through the season. United's move comes after they conducted an inquiry into the Portugal star's explosive interview to Piers Morgan ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2022.

Ronaldo in the interview had taken several digs at the club, calling out the senior executives as well as the coach Erik ten Hag. Ronaldo had said that the club owners - the Glazers' family did not care about the team and insinuated that they only wanted the money that Manchester United generated.

One of the greatest Manchester United players of all time, Ronaldo's second stint at the club has been rather unsuccessful in the 2022 season, with the manager clearly preferring younger players in his system. Ronaldo has had multiple falls out with the club, once refusing to come on as a substitute in a Premier League match. The player also left the stadium before the final whistle in the same game.

"Cristiano Ronaldo is to leave Manchester United by mutual agreement, with immediate effect. The club thanks him for his immense contribution across two spells at Old Trafford, scoring 145 goals in 346 appearances, and wishes him and his family well for the future. Everyone at Manchester United remains focused on continuing the team’s progress under Erik ten Hag and working together to deliver success on the pitch," the club said in a statement.

Ronaldo was heavily criticised by the former Manchester United players this season. The former players pointed fingers at the star's attitude amid rising tensions inside the club. In return, Ronaldo gave a cold shoulder to one of his critics Gary Neville during the live broadcast, refusing to shake hands with him. He also called his critics 'rats' in the interview with Piers Morgan.

United first reacted after the snippets of the interview came out in social media and said that they will be taking their decision after the entire interview goes live. It took United 5 days to announce their decision since the final part went live on YouTube.

Ronaldo is currently with Portugal at the FIFA World Cup and has not given any comments on the matter.
