By India Today Web Desk: Iran manager Carlos Queiroz said it was a wonderful day for the team after their dramatic and late 2-0 win over Wales on Friday in a Group B encounter.
Rouzbeh Cheshmi and Ramin Rezaeian scored two late stoppage-time goals to help secure all three points on the day where we saw Wayne Hennessey pick up the first red card of the tournament.
Iran had started the game brightly and was the dominant side throughout the contest. Sardar Azmoun had a couple of good chances but failed to capitalize and the Asian giants had a goal ruled out in the 15th minute due to offside. Hennessey's red card changed the complexion of the game and Iran took full advantage to score in the eighth and eleventh minutes of stoppage time to secure the win.
Speaking to the reporters after the match, Queiroz said that this was just the beginning and his team will need to get the job done after their win on Friday. He said it was a wonderful day for his team and said his players were brilliant and deserved all the attention and respect from the fans.
"This is just the beginning. We need now to finish the job. But it was a wonderful day for us. We're back to football and I don't have words to say, how to say thank you to our players. They were brilliant. They deserve all the attention and respect and I think today, the people understand that these boys love to play football," said Queiroz.
The Iran manager also had a special message for the fans and said that the team got the win for them and they're at the World Cup for them.
"The players deserve to be supported and we did it for them, and we did it for them. That's the only reason we're here. To play for the fans," said Queiroz.
Iran will now face the USA in their final group game.
