Manchester United announced in the late hours of Tuesday that they have come to an agreement with Ronaldo to terminate their contract midway through the season. United's move comes after they conducted an inquiry into the Portugal star's explosive interview to British journalist Piers Morgan ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2022.
The club released a statement saying is to leave Manchester United with immediate effect, thanking him for his services.
“Cristiano Ronaldo is to leave Manchester United by mutual agreement, with immediate effect. The club thanks him for his immense contribution across two spells at Old Trafford, scoring 145 goals in 346 appearances, and wishes him and his family well for the future. Everyone at Manchester United remains focused on continuing the team’s progress under Erik ten Hag and working together to deliver success on the pitch,” the club said in a statement.
Former Manchester United player Wayne Rooney reacted to the news and said that it is a shame that things had to end this way between United and their brightest ever talent. Rooney, one of the critics that Ronaldo mentioned in his interview, said that he wished Ronaldo the best for his future.
“I think obviously he would have known that this was coming. We are hearing it for the first time, but this would have been discussed with Manchester United and Cristiano Ronaldo and his team,” Rooney said on JioCinema, the official streamers of FIFA World Cup in India.
Ronaldo will be in action during Portugal’s opening Group H match against Ghana on November 24. Portugal has been grouped with Ghana, South Korea and two-time World champions Uruguay in the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
