By India Today Web Desk: Germany's 1-2 defeat to Japan in their opening match of the FIFA World Cup 2022 has not gone down well with their fans as they criticised their national players for "only focusing on politics" at the ongoing tournament.

The four-time world champions were shocked with Japan making a statement, coming from behind in the second half and running away with three points on Wednesday (November 23).

Germany's players as well as federation voiced their opposition to the 'OneLove' armband ban at the World Cup 2022 in Qatar. It is to be noted that same-sex relations are illegal and punishable in Qatar. When Germans planned to wear the armband, FIFA threatened with yellow cards to players wearing the armband.

"Germany deserved that for being so obsessed with rainbow armbands and politics," a fan tweeted.

Another said: "Don't get sidetracked by the 'politics' and just play your football. All these needless virtue signaling isn't helping you win. Germany should've won this."

"You Germans deserve this for your stupid virtue signalling, respect Qatar's culture and keep your stupid politics out of football," a user wrote.

However, German players made a silent protest at the start of the match by putting their hands on their mouth, indicating they are not allowed to raise objection against discrimination. Moreover, some players wore rainbow colours on their boots as protest.

"We wanted to use our captain’s armband to take a stand for values that we hold in the Germany national team: diversity and mutual respect. Together with other nations, we wanted our voice to be heard," Germany football tweeted.

"It wasn’t about making a political statement – human rights are non-negotiable. That should be taken for granted, but it still isn’t the case. That’s why this message is so important to us. Denying us the armband is the same as denying us a voice. We stand by our position."
