By Latha Srinivasan: At the ongoing IFFI (Goa), a Telugu biopic on Khudiram Bose, one of the youngest martyrs in India’s freedom struggle, was recently screened and it has generated a massive positive buzz. The big question on everyone’s mind was why a Bengali film director had not taken up this story all this while.

Khudiram Bose was an iconic freedom fighter from Bengal and a Telugu film director – Vidya Sagar Raju – was influenced by this young man and decided to make a biopic on him in Telugu! The movie stars Rakesh Jagrlamudi as Khudiram and also features Vivek Oberoi, Atul Kulkarni and Nasser. While the film has been made in Telugu, the director plans to screen the film in Hindi on December 17 to all the MPs during the Winter Session of Parliament.

Director Vidya Sagar Raju said that he had to undertake massive research before he started working on the script. Khudiram Bose was executed at the age of 18 for trying to kill District Judge Kingsford. Important historical events, like the Partition of Bengal, and personalities like Rabindranath Tagore, Swami Vivekananda, Sister Nivedita and Barendranath Ghosh, were also part of this freedom fighter’s journey.

While many know of Khudiram Bose's freedom struggle, new aspects of his life have been revealed in this Telugu biopic. For instance, six lawyers, including eminent lawyer Narendra Kumar Basu, fought the case for Khudiram, but they sadly lost. Also, the first Indian flag was designed by Sister Nivedita and this is an important event in the film.

Director Vidya Sagar Raju said, “When our team went through Khudiram’s history, we found there were a lot of things to show. The script takes us through the horrors of the Bengal partition in which many historical characters are involved. I tried to make the scope of the biopic a little wider.”

This is the Telugu director’s third film and he says he wants everyone to know about Khudiram Bose. The movie will be released in theatres in December in seven languages.
