Rakesh Sachan, who heads the medium, small, and micro enterprises and Khadi departments in the Uttar Pradesh government, created a major embarrassment for the BJP after a video of him garlanding a portrait of PM Modi on his 72nd birthday went viral.

Sachan, who joined the BJP from the Congress just before the recent state polls, placed a garland on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s portrait.

Youth Congress president Srinivas BV shared the video on Twitter in which the UP minister is seen with his party workers celebrating the prime minister's birthday with a cake and a portrait.

"The destruction of intelligence is the biggest identity of the BJP," said Srinivas, while sharing the video.

Rakesh Sachan entered politics in the early 90s, joining the Samajwadi Party (SP). In 1993 and 2002, he was elected an MLA from the Ghatampur Assembly seat before winning parliamentary elections in 2009 from the Fatehpur Lok Sabha seat. He was recently convicted in an Arms Act case.
