A fast-track in Uttar Pradesh's Varanasi awarded a 10-year imprisonment and a fine of Rs 10,000 to an Etawah-based Muslim cleric for raping and threatening a woman. However, Maulana Jarjis was seen smiling while coming out of the court after the order was pronounced.
Justice Neeraj Shrivastava pronounced the order and awarded 10-year imprisonment to Etawah’s Maulana Jarjis in a rape case and also slapped a fine on him.
In 2016, a woman from Varanasi alleged that the cleric raped her on the pretext of marriage and later blackmailed her. According to the woman's complaint, she met Jarjis in 2013 and whenever he came to Varanasi, he raped her on the pretext of marriage. She also alleged that the accused recorded obscene videos and blackmailed her.
COMPLAINT FILED IN 2015
The woman filed a complaint to the police against Maulana Jarjis, accusing him of rape, blackmail and other charges. An FIR was registered under the relevant sections of the IPC. The case in which Jarjis was awarded punishment was registered on January 17, 2016 at Jaitpura police station in Varanasi.
Meanwhile, Jarjis claimed he was not guilty, saying he would move a higher court against the fast-track court’s verdict.
