Amounting to a big win for the DRI (directorate of revenue intelligence), the apex anti-smuggling governmental agency foiled attempts at unlawful purchase and sale of gold. The body seized 65.46kg of gold in Mumbai, Patna and Delhi in one of the biggest seizures of smuggled gold in the recent past.

"The DRI seized 394 pieces of foreign-made gold bars valued at approximately Rs 33.40 crore, being smuggled from neighbouring northeastern countries," the anti-smuggling body stated.

DRI received information about a large consignment that was about to reach India, involving the smuggling of gold on a large scale through Mizoram. Thereafter, 'Operation Gold Rush' was initiated. Domestic couriers and logistics companies were used for smuggling and the consignment of gold was hidden in different types of household items.

Firstly, the DRI seized nearly 120 gold biscuits under Operation Gold Rush in Bhiwandi, Maharashtra, whose weight is about 19.93 kg and the value is estimated to be around Rs 10.18 crore.

Later, it was found that two consignments, which came to Mizoram from abroad and reached Mumbai, had also been dispatched to Delhi and Patna via courier. Following this, 172 gold biscuits weighing 28.57 kg and worth about Rs 14.5 crore were seized after raiding the warehouse of the same logistics company in the Bihar capital city.

The third was confiscated from Delhi, where 102 gold biscuits weighing 16.96 kg and valued at Rs 8.69 crore have been estimated. A total of 394 gold biscuits weighing 65.46 kg and a total value of about Rs 33.40 crore were seized.
