The Congress' central election authority issued a notification for the party presidential election on Thursday, setting in motion a process to elect successor to the party's longest-serving leader, Sonia Gandhi.

Election authority chairman Madhusudan Mistry issued the notification, which said that the process of filing nominations will be held from September 24 to 30.

The date of scrutiny of nomination papers would be October 1. The last date for the withdrawal of nominations would be October 8.

If there is more than one candidate, the election will take place on October 17. The counting of votes and declaration of results will be on October 19.

So far, Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot and MP Shashi Tharoor have announced their intentions to enter the fray.

After over two decades, the Congress will witness a contest for the post of party chief.

Meanwhile, the chorus for Rahul Gandhi's return to the party's top post has been growing as he leads the Bharat Jodo Yatra. Several state units have passed a resolution demanding his return.
