By Dev Ankur Wadhawan: Members of the Maldhari community are up in arms against the ruling Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Gujarat. The community has accused the BJP of ill treating its members, of not fulfilling their long-pending demands and have threatened to vote against the saffron party in the upcoming assembly elections.

In September, the community held a huge Mahapanchayat in the state’s Mehsana District which was attended by over 50,000 people.

The community has several pending demands and claimed that for the last one-and-a-half years, the BJP government in Gujarat has turned a deaf ear to their demands because of which they have decided not to vote for the party in the polls next month.

Nagjibhai Desai, a spokesperson of the community who also happens to be associated with the Congress, claimed that the community has decided not to vote in favour of the BJP to teach the party a lesson.

"The BJP has not fulfilled the demands that were raised by us. During the mahapanchayat in September, it was decided to find a roadmap. That is why the committee of members, taking the matter forward, has decided to call for a boycott of the BJP in the upcoming assembly elections," Desai told India Today TV.

Some of the demands raised by the community in Gujarat include providing Scheduled Tribe status to the community members living in the areas of Barda and Alech, withdrawing false cases against community members and the status of farmers for the community members. These demands, Desai claimed, have not been fulfilled despite being raised a long time ago.
