By Grace Cyril: Madhur Bhandarkar has worked with many A-listers in the industry in many hit films. Next up, he has India Lockdown, which is all set to release on Zee5 on December 2. The film stars Aahana Kumra and Prateik Babbar, among others. Ahead of that, Madhur sat down for an exclusive conversation with IndiaToday.in where he spoke about making his films in a budgeted way and how he chooses his cast.
"I MAKE FILMS IN A BUDGETED WAY"
When asked what he looks for when he chooses the cast of his films, Madhur Bhandarkar said, "I look what would best suit the character. My characters determine whom I want to cast in the film, and how they will look. Then only I start the casting. I am not a proposal filmmaker. I make films on different subjects. I call myself an experimental filmmaker and that’s why my films are a commercial success. I make films because I am a film buff and I need to tell stories. Sometimes there are actors who say no to doing a film, sometimes there is the economy thing. I make films in a budgeted way. India Lockdown cast fulfilled the director’s conviction. They met all the needs."
"I DON'T WANT TO BE TYPECAST"
Asked why is he often inclined towards making realistic films, Madhur Bhandarkar said, "I am a storyteller. I want to make all kinds of cinema. Don’t be surprised if tomorrow I make an action film. In fact, I do want to make an action film. I am a film buff. I want to make a thriller and horror also. If I find a spooky idea, I will make a film from that. I have made all kinds of contrasting films. I made Page 3, Dil To Baccha Hai Ji, Satta, Babli Bouncer. As a storyteller, I want to narrate all kinds of aspects. I don’t want to be typecast that Madhur makes only particular kind of films. Yeah, my films are very much in the realm of reality. They don’t go over the board. It remains in the real space and that’s how I want to keep it."
"I MADE TWO FILMS DURING COVID LOCKDOWN"
Recalling his Covid-19 lockdown days, Madhur Bhandarkar said, "I am a huge film buff so during lockdown, I mostly binge-watched a lot. I also made two films during that time – Babli Bouncer and India Lockdown. I connected with a lot of people. Both the lockdowns were a different experience for me. India Lockdown was shot during the latter part of the lockdown. It was great to depict on screen what we really saw and to derive from society what turmoil they went through.
India Lockdown is directed by Madhur Bhandarkar. The film promises to bring the horrors of the Covid-19 lockdown in India. The film stars Aahana Kumra, Prateik Babbar, Shweta Prasad Basu and Sai Tamhankar, among others.
