West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday inaugurated the newly constructed Tala Bridge in North Kolkata. "This is a gift before the Durga Puja to our people," said the chief minister at the inauguration.
Commuters coming to North Kolkata from Baranagar or Sinthi Junction will no longer have to cross the Belgachia Bridge. The opening of the bridge before Durga Puja is expected to reduce traffic congestion in the city.
Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) Mayor, Firhad Hakim, said, "This new bridge was built using the latest technology, it has become much stronger than before."
The bridge received its safety certificate from Eastern Railway after IIT-Kharagpur vetted the structure's load-testing report.
Earlier, a health inspection of the Tala Bridge was carried out in September 2018 after the Majerhat Bridge collapsed.
